Do you know that feeling when you are like “this is gonna be my year, fuck yeah!” (or month or week or day)?
It is a nice feeling. And it’s very valuable in the moment that you are feeling it.
But what people often do is project some imagined Amazing Future onto their lives as if it’s a reality. You are then convinced this really IS gonna be your year/month/day. But then shit happens, and you get disappointed.
You projecting this amazingly cool outcome creates an expectation, and then, due to your patterns, or just life—but seriously, 99% of the time your patterns—you actually make it so that what you felt you wanted to happen, that you hoped would happen, doesn’t happen.
Better is to notice this nice feeling for what it is: a signal that you are on the right track, and enjoy it for as long as you are feeling the excitement. But then be totally OK (not a forced “OK”) with the nice feeling leaving you again.
Because if you do suddenly fear the feeling leaving you (and with it, your hopes and dreams), you make decisions out of fear. Those decisions then work directly against the Amazing Future you had in mind.
Side note: those fears you have are expectations and projections in themselves as well. Instead of the Amazing Future, you fear the Horrible Future!
So what can I say but this: be in the moment!
Enjoy it when you feel good, and be content (and compassionate with yourself) when you don’t. Cause it’s 100% the case that you’ll return to baseline or feeling good again at some point, but this happens so much faster when you’re open to it (i.e., not when you’re in fear).
This is all easier said than done, of course…
For example, I often have expectations about how my kids are doing/should be doing or what standards my work should be (hence I’m posting this in the spur of the moment, so I can’t convince myself to keep this as a draft 😅😂).
What do you often have expectations about? Let met know!
